Prempro Overview

Prempro (conjugated estrogens and medroxyprogesterone) is an oral medicine that is used for providing relief to women suffering from menopausal symptoms. It is essentially a type of hormone replacement therapy that should be taken at prescribed dosage. The drug is a combination of progestin and estrogen hormone and usually prescribed after menopause has started.

The drug is primarily used for treating symptoms of menopause like vaginal dryness, hot flashes, irritation and burning sensation in or around vagina. It is also used for preventing osteoporosis that may be triggered by menopause.

How Prempro Works

Women experience a change in levels and balance of estrogen after menopause. Before menopause, estrogen is produced by ovaries and after menopause it is produced by adrenal gland. Menopausal symptoms result from this shift and decrease in levels of estrogen. Prempro relieves the symptoms by replacing the progesterone and estrogen that the ovaries no longer produce after menopause. It works only with women still having uterus (who have not had a hysterectomy).

Side Effects and Risks of Prempro

Bleeding or spotting from vagina, vaginitis, breast pain and leg cramps are some common side effects of this drug. Women having history of heart attack, blood clot in lungs, liver disease and abnormal vaginal bleeding should avoid this drug. Prolonged use of this drug may increase chances of breast cancer or heart attack. Overweight, regular smokers and pregnant women should avoid this drug.

Legal Perspective

Several lawsuits have been filed by litigants suffering from side effects of Prempro. In a recent development, manufacturer of the drug, Pfizer Inc., agreed to pay about $330 million for settling claims that use of Prempro has caused breast cancer (Bloomberg, Feb 09, 2011).
