Mike Arias was interviewed by Massage Magazine discussing the impact a new law will have on independent contractors, such as massage therapists, throughout the state in 2020.
In September, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed AB 5 into law, requiring most companies to reclassify independent contractors as full-time employees in order to stop the exploitation of workers. The “gig-worker rule” would also require Uber, Lyft, and other app-based companies to pay all of their employees minimum wage and provide them with benefits like health insurance and paid sick days. Although the bill is geared towards protecting workers, it also has the potential to affect other gig economy workers across the state, including those in the massage therapy business. “I think … there’s going to probably have to be some litigation or clarification with the legislature in order to work this out with massage therapists,” said Arias.
