What is a class action?
A class action is a type of civil lawsuit (also called a “civil action”) where one or more plaintiffs (the people bringing the lawsuit), file a lawsuit on behalf of themselves and other individuals who have been wronged by a company or organization in a similar way.
The plaintiffs together with the larger group of people with the similar problem are referred to as the “class” and the plaintiffs who filed the class action are called the “class representatives.” A lawsuit may be filed and proposed as a class action, but it does not become a class action until the judge in the case issues a ruling referred to as known as “class certification,” giving the go-ahead for the case to proceed as a class action.
