McKnight, et al. v. Uber Technologies Inc.
Case Synopsis
A California federal judge finalized a $32.5 million settlement in early 2023 agreed upon by Uber and a group of consumers who alleged Uber misled them about safe ride fees and the quality of its driversโ background checks. The judge in the case previously rejected an earlier $28.5 million settlement of the case, in which he ruled that only riders who paid Uber’s “Safe Rides Fee” would have benefited from it. U.S. District Judge Jon S. Tigar ruled that Uber Technology Inc.’s revised deal corrects the inequities in the original deal by cutting out riders who never paid the Safe Rides Fee and increasing the overall settlement allotment by $4 million. โ[T]he proposed settlement adequately addresses the concerns raised in the denial order and fairly and reasonably protects the class,โ Judge Tigar said. The class consisted of roughly 25 million consumers who will each receive compensation from the settlement. The class includes riders who paid the Safe Rides Fee in the United States or its territories between Jan. 1, 2013, and Jan. 1, 2016.
