By Emily Grable
My name is Emily Grable, and my journey from a Law Clerk to a new associate at Arias Sanguinetti has been full of growth and inspiration.
As a law student, I heard horror stories from my peers about their experiences working at different firms. They told tales of law firms intentionally painting unrealistic pictures about what it is like to be an associate or firms consistently failing to put their clients first. It seemed like an impossible feat to find the perfect firm.
After moving from my hometown of Reno Nevada to Las Vegas to study at the Boyd School of Law, I graduated from Boyd with my Juris Doctorate in May of 2023. Before my second year of law school, I thought I wanted to be a criminal defense attorney. While working several jobs in the criminal sector, I did not feel the spark for criminal law that I anticipated having. Nonetheless, I felt an intrinsic pull to help people and realized I should try my hand at representing plaintiffs in civil litigation.
Thus began my job search where I came across a posting for Arias Sanguinetti Law Clerks. After perusing the firm’s website, I saw that the firm had an impressive track record and that their attorneys had vast experience in numerous practice areas. I was especially drawn to Arias Sanguinetti because there is a theme throughout their work –they always stand up for the little guy.
I was fortunate enough to be hired as a law clerk in the Las Vegas branch in the Spring of 2022. As soon as I began my job, I could feel the attorneys’ passion for our clients. The attorneys explained the status of our cases to me with intensity and gusto, and I began to understand that what makes Arias Sanguinetti different is that the attorneys advocate for their clients 24/7 – not because they must, but because they want to. They work tirelessly towards obtaining timely and just results for their clients.
During my clerkship, the attorneys encouraged me to pursue any practice area that peaked my interest, and I found myself drawn to a field that I did not anticipate loving – medical malpractice. Not only did the medical aspect of the cases interest me, but I also felt an intense drive to help the victims.
In Nevada, there is a constant decline in the number of medical malpractice attorneys due to tough tort reform measures making it extremely difficult for medical malpractice attorneys to stay in business. As a result, finding representation can be a nearly impossible task for victims. Negative tort reform legislation did not stop any of the attorneys at Arias Sanguinetti, and they continued to take on numerous medical malpractice cases. Knowing that victims had a place to seek justice and hopefully make themselves whole again was incredibly inspiring. Through my work at the firm, I found a new passion beyond practicing law – working on legislation for medical malpractice. Many of the attorneys at Arias Sanguinetti have worked on legislation, and working alongside them inspired me to draft a bill to raise the damage cap on medical malpractice cases in Nevada.
Not only did I love the work aspect of the firm, but I also loved all of my colleagues. Everyone at Arias Sanguinetti treats one another with the utmost respect. Even as a law clerk, the attorneys treated me like I was already one of them. They loved listening to my ideas and took any chance to mentor me. It always seemed to be a myth that everyone at a workplace could be one happy family. But that is what Arias Sanguinetti is. I have truly met some of the most incredible people here.
When I got offered a job to stay on as an associate, it was a no-brainer for me to accept. I flashed back to when I listened to my peers’ horror stories from different firms and knew I was one of the lucky ones getting to stay at Arias Sanguinetti. I am absolutely ecstatic to start my career here.
