Why do these forms of birth control cause vision loss?
Mirena and Depo Provera have all been linked to the conditions pseudo tumor cerebri and idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). All three of the forms of birth control use hormones that increase a woman’s risk of these serious conditions.
Adverse Side Effects
Mirena and Depo Provera have been known to cause vision loss and blindness. If a woman develops pseudo tumor cerebri or IIH, often it is necessary to perform a spinal tap to relieve the pressure causing the vision loss. If the fluid continues to build up over time, it may be necessary to surgically place a shunt to drain cerebrospinal fluid to relieve the pressure and stop further vision loss. Even with these surgical interventions, once vision loss occurs, it often is never fully restored. Additionally, the buildup of fluid can cause severe headaches, fatigue and inability to perform daily activities.
