La Donna McDuffie
La Donna McDuffie is a Senior Paralegal at Arias Sanguinetti Trial Lawyers in the firm’s Southern California office. With more than two decades of experience in the legal field, she supports attorneys throughout complex civil litigation involving product liability, mass torts, personal injury, catastrophic injury, wrongful death, class actions, employment matters, and sexual abuse litigation. Complex litigation has become a particular focus of her career, and she values being involved in cases from their earliest stages through resolution or trial.
She has assisted attorneys in matters resulting in significant verdicts, settlements, and published opinions. Her role encompasses the many moving pieces required to move complex litigation forward, including managing discovery, drafting pleadings, maintaining case calendars, tracking critical deadlines, preparing matters for trial, and providing attorneys with detailed institutional knowledge and case support.
Thoroughness is the defining characteristic of La Donna’s work. She can quickly reconstruct decisions and processes months or even years later and has made her a dependable resource for attorneys and staff throughout the firm. For La Donna, spending a few additional minutes documenting something correctly is worth it if it means the information can be found immediately when it is needed later.
La Donna’s path to the legal profession began unexpectedly. A college friend connected her with a law firm that needed temporary assistance on a major document review.. What began as temporary work introduced La Donna to large-scale litigation, and she quickly realized she enjoyed it enough to pursue the profession formally. While working at the firm, La Donna enrolled in the Paralegal Studies program and completed her certification while simultaneously gaining hands-on legal experience. Her decision reflected a lesson she credits to her father: if she was going to pursue something, she was going to do it correctly and see it through. That philosophy has remained a defining part of her professional approach throughout her career.
Over the years, La Donna has developed experience across a broad range of plaintiff-side matters. She particularly enjoys complex litigation and has also worked extensively on personal injury, class actions, and employment matters. Her experience has also made La Donna a natural mentor within the firm. She welcomes questions from junior paralegals, fellows, and other staff and is willing to stop what she is doing to help someone work through a problem. Her philosophy, however, is to teach rather than simply take over: she will show someone how to complete a task and work through it alongside them, but expects them to do the work themselves so they can develop the skill. She has become known for practical shortcuts, efficient processes, and methods that prevent legal staff from unnecessarily recreating work.
Professional development for paralegals is especially important to La Donna. She believes that if someone chooses the paralegal profession as a career, they should invest in developing the credentials, knowledge, and practical skills necessary to do the work well. La Donna also manages Arias Sanguinetti’s Legal Fellowship Program, helping aspiring legal advocates gain hands-on exposure to plaintiff-side litigation. Through the program, fellows work alongside attorneys and legal professionals and develop practical experience before taking the next steps in their legal careers. Many former fellows have gone on to become attorneys, and La Donna’s involvement reflects the same hands-on approach to mentorship she brings to the firm’s legal staff.
La Donna earned her bachelor’s degree from Pepperdine University and later completed her Paralegal Certification through West Los Angeles College while simultaneously gaining hands-on experience in the legal field. She is an active member of the professional paralegal community and holds memberships with the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles (CAALA), Los Angeles Paralegal Association (LAPA), NALA – The Paralegal Association, and Legal Professionals, Inc.
Many know La Donna for the humor she brings to any space. She has been described as “sunshine” by those close to her for her ability to make people laugh and find the silver lining when situations become stressful. That balance of experience, practicality, humor, and dependability has made her both a trusted resource and a steady presence for colleagues throughout her career.
